The MOV file extension is a Quick Time File Format (QTFF) which uses a proprietary multimedia compression algorithm developed by Apple Computer. These files are compatible with both Apple and Windows platforms. The MOV file follows the `movie resources`, `movie atom`, or `movie atom` structure. Each `atom` contains size and type fields, and then actual sample data. This data may be compressed video frames or audio samples. The media data does not necessarily need to be stored in the MOV file. Separate data streams in realtime or in fixed databases, or some combination, may be used.
